Experience a variety of classical and contemporary productions presented by the Hunter College Theatre Department.

 

 

 

Department Productions

The Hunter College Theatre Department produces a variety of classical and contemporary performances in its Frederick Loewe Theatre and in its very own Baker Theatre Building spaces. These productions are led by professional New York City directors, designers, and stage managers, offering students unique opportunities to develop their craft both onstage and backstage, while also creating working connections with members of the contemporary NYC theatre community.

Theatre majors get first access to our exclusive visiting artist events. These events sessions allow theatre students to learn from seasoned professionals. Recent artists include actor Alec Baldwin, Tony award-winning producer of The Band’s Vist, Orin Wolf and Voza Rivers, the executive producer and founding member of the New Heritage Theatre Group.

 Floria Lasky Visiting Artists | Wed @ One | International Artists

Floria Lasky Visiting Artists

Established in 2012 through a generous grant from Hunter College President Jennifer Raab and funded by the Frederick Loewe Foundation, the Floria Lasky Visiting Artist program enables the Department of Theatre to host renowned theatre artists for short-term residencies each semester.
 

Past Floria Lasky Artists have included actor/director Roger Rees, playwrights Lynn Nottage, John Guare, playwright/director John Patrick Shanley, and actress/playwright/educator Anna Deavere Smith.

Wed @ One

Wednesday at One (Wed @ One) is an ongoing series, in conversation with award-winning theatre artists. During these Q & A sessions, students get up close and personal 
 

Past artists include actor Alec Baldwin, Tony award-winning producer of The Band’s Vist, Orin Wolf and Voza Rivers the executive producer and founding member of the New Heritage Theatre Group.

International Artists

The Hunter College Theatre Department hosts visiting artists from around the world. Past visiting artists have sessions on:

Kyogen - The Japanese classical comic theater which seeks out the humor in people’s daily lives.

Kathakali - Professional artists from the Kalamandalan Performing Arts Academy in India demonstrated the main features of this intricate traditional dance-drama form.

Kunqu - Members of the Shanghai Kunqu Theatre Troupe will perform the Chinese classic Peony Pavilion and their own adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth

 
 
 
 

THEATRE CLUB

 

 

The Hunter Theatre Company (HTC) is a student run club that offers  support and funding for student productions, workshops, and festivals.

 

 

 

Theatre Club

This student-run organization provides students with the opportunity to experience the performing arts through workshops, seminars, events, and student-generated productions. The club produces at least three shows a year—in the Theatre Department’s Goldberg Studio Theatre, and also in the new Club facilities located in the Baker Theatre Building—in addition to hosting various other events such as the Undergraduate Playwrights Festival and Cabarets.

Hunter Theater Project (HTP) is a resource serving Hunter College and New York City. College-wide in scope, it links productions created by top-rank professional theater artists with the college’s teaching, learning, and research mission, giving vivid expression to subjects across the curriculum.

Hunter Theater Project (HTP) is a resource serving Hunter College and New York City. College-wide in scope, it links productions created by top-rank professional theater artists with the college’s teaching, learning, and research mission, giving vivid expression to subjects across the curriculum.

Hunter students and faculty get first access to discounted tickets before they go on sale to the general public. Theatre majors also get access to various special events and opportunities. In the past, this has included: special Wed @ One Q&A sessions, paid ushering jobs, and open rehearsal policies for any student who wants to sit in and observe in person.
